About the Youth Leadership Council

The Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Council (YLC) of Canada has been gaining speed and increasing its
impact over the last three years. The purpose of the YLC is to assist JGI Canada in advancing the vision and
mission of the Roots & Shoots program, to ensure a youth perspective is brought to the development of
all initiatives, and to mentor local Roots & Shoots groups across the country. We also offer once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities to YLC members, in Canada and abroad.

This year, the main focus of the YLC will be to support and mentor Roots & Shoots groups in schools and the community. They will use their experiences and skills to help groups become engaged and take action for issues that are important and relevant to them, while learning and gaining new skills themselves!

What Does the YLC Do?

The primary role of council members is to:

  • Be a Roots & Shoots ambassador
  • Support and mentor local Roots & Shoots groups with information, ideas and inspiration
  • Deliver presentations to schools and community groups to raise awareness about conservation
  • Contribute to the development of Roots & Shoots campaigns, resources and communications
  • Volunteer at and organize events, and support volunteers in your area
  • Build friendships with Roots & Shoots youth in Canada and around the world

Canada-US YLC Collaboration

The US and Canada YLCs have joined forces to share their experiences and collaborate on cross-border initiatives.

Both national Councils share the vision that regardless of geographic location and borders, they can work together to fulfill the objectives of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program. The Roots & Shoots motto “The Power of Youth is Global”, is central to this collaboration and the great potential that this partnership has in creating a better world.

Each YLC has a representative that sits in on the other's Council. This representative plays a crucial role in strengthening the relationship between Roots & Shoots Canada and Roots & Shoots USA. By creating a stronger connection between our two countries, the YLCs hope to work together in taking on larger challenges and realizing even more significant goals.

The US National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) has elected Lauren Gibson for a second term, to represent the US NYLC on the Canadian YLC. Lauren is a member of the Great Lakes Regional YLC and also a part of the NYLC. Read her profile here.

Lauren began as ambassador to the US in February 2010, and attends all our monthly meetings. Lauren joined the YLC Leadership Retreat in March 2010, and will be joining us again for our Retreat in August 2011!

The Canadian YLC has also elected Shailyn Drukis as the Canadian representative to the US NYLC, for a second term. This year Camila Moya will also be sharing Canadian ambassador duties with Shailyn. Check out their profiles here .
