Roots & Shoots for Aboriginal Youth
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program is a youth action program and global network of young people working for positive change in their communities and beyond. Roots & Shoots is proud to welcome First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth to the initiative to create new and inspiring projects for their communities and elsewhere! Read more
Why are First Nations, Inuit and Métis being asked to join Roots & Shoots?
First Nations, Inuit and Métis possess a wide range of skills and knowledge – like Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) – that have been passed down for generations. TEK involves the knowledge of one’s own environment that is gained through experiences, actions and interactions. It also allows people to adapt, survive and thrive within their ecological system. TEK is important in protecting our people, animals and the environment.
Aboriginal culture is also rooted in the belief that the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual aspects of oneself are interconnected, which is often reflected in the teachings of our Elders. Maintaining healthy bodies, minds and spirits is important when addressing the environmental and humanitarian issues that are faced by First Nations, Inuit and Métis people and communities. |

2012 Project Development Grant Recipients
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots has offered small grants again this year of up to $500 for projects to be developed by First Nations, Inuit and Métis groups/communities that make a commitment to being part of the Roots & Shoots for Aboriginal Youth Program. Projects were required to take positive action to help people, animals and the environment. Grants have been awarded to enthusiastic groups who have expressed a clear plan for implementing a youth-led community action project.
Congratulations to the 2012 PDG recipients! Click on the groups in the maps below to learn more about their exciting projects!
