Climbing Aconcagua to Save the Planet
Delta Chelsea Managing Director Raises $25,000 for the Jane Goodall Institute
Toronto, ON – date – On Monday, May 12, renowned primatologist, environmentalist and UN Messenger of Peace Dr. Jane Goodall was in Toronto to receive a cheque for $25,369 from Josef Ebner, Regional Vice-President and Managing Director at the Delta Chelsea, Canada’s largest hotel. The cheque was the sum total of the funds raised by Mr. Ebner as sponsorship of his climb of Aconcagua in January.
The cheque was received by Dr. Goodall at a special Argentina-themed luncheon at the Delta Chelsea, attended by the top donors to the campaign.
Only the most serious climbers will attempt Aconcagua, the highest summit outside the Himalayas. At 6,962 meters (22,840 ft), it is considered one of the most dangerous climbs due to the severe weather conditions and terrain. Mr. Ebner has been a climber for most of his life and climbing for a cause has now become an annual event for him. Last year, he successfully reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in Africa, the highest freestanding mountain in the world and raised $30,000 for Special Olympics Canada.
This year, his efforts were for the Jane Goodall Institute and its Roots & Shoots environmental education program. Dr. Goodall was inspired to establish the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in 1977 to combat the rapid degradation of critical habitat for chimpanzees and other African wildlife. Today, the Institute has evolved into a dynamic international organization that supports wildlife research, conservation and education around the world.
JGI Canada, founded in 1994, supports community-centred conservation programs in Africa, sanctuaries for orphaned chimpanzees, and the Roots & Shoots program in Canada. Roots & Shoots is JGI’s environmental and humanitarian education program and global network of youth from over 100 countries. To date, more than 10,500 young Canadians have been engaged in hands-on action projects to benefit humans, animals and the environment in their communities.
