Incredible Opportunity for Canadian Teachers in Uganda
Canadians to Train Ugandan Teachers to Deliver Environmental Education Programs
Toronto, ON – A pilot project by the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI) will see three Canadian teachers travelling to Uganda this summer to assist in the delivery of an environmental education workshop for Ugandan teachers.
Emma Roche from Royal St. George’s College, Toronto, Meg O’Mahony from University of Toronto School and Alison Elliott from Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario will travel to Uganda on July 3rd for two weeks.
In Africa, the Canadian teachers will work with JGI Uganda to prepare and deliver workshops on co-operative learning techniques, nature interpretation and general environmental education. Uganda faces huge environmental challenges such as deforestation, agriculture intensification and other human threats to endangered primates such as chimpanzees and mountain gorillas.
Working with Ugandan teachers who have large class sizes and limited resources will challenge the Canadians to be creative in passing on their skills. It is expected that this will be a two-way learning experience. The Canadians hope to build relationships with the Ugandan teachers that will allow classes in the both countries to correspond, discuss world issues and implement ideas for action.
"I am thrilled to be taking part in this wonderful partnership between Canadians and Ugandans,” says Alison Elliott. “Contributing to the legacy of Jane Goodall is a dream come true. Every environmental lesson a child learns, helps us get one step closer to a sustainable future."
In addition to paying all their own expenses, the teachers have raised more than $6,000 to cover the cost of the workshop in Uganda.
The teachers will be documenting their experience on a blog at www.jgiteachertraining.blogspot.com.
