Manager, Fundraising & Events

 

Founded in 1993, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI) is part of a dynamic, global network of Jane Goodall Institutes around the world. JGI Canada supports habitat conservation and chimpanzee protection programs in Africa and runs Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots – a global youth action program – here in Canada.  

JGI is now seeking a dynamic, results-oriented individual to join our small team in Toronto to manage and execute the organization’s fundraising events, and to manage logistics during Dr. Jane Goodall’s Canadian tours. Reporting to the Director of Development & Marketing, this newly created position will be also be responsible for creating and implementing a third party event policy and plan, managing annual giving programs including Team Goodall and Chimp Guardian, and assisting with a number of other fundraising and marketing tasks and campaigns, as needed.

Responsibilities 

  • Initiate, plan, execute and evaluate all fundraising and special events including those associated with Dr. Goodall’s tours (will require weekend and evening time)
  • Develop fundraising materials and sponsorship proposals, and solicit funds in support of events
  • Facilitate strategy and debriefing meetings for key events
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with key sponsors, contacts, volunteers and donors
  • Manage and track JGI’s direct marketing and annual giving programs including Team Goodall and Chimp Guardian
  • Create and implement a third party event policy and program plan
  • Manage budgets for special events, third party events and annual giving programs
  • Maintain and update website with special event activities, third party events and annual giving program information
  • Assist with the fundraising components associated with the Roots & Shoots youth action program and Africa Programs
  • Assist with prospect research and major-donor management, including regular reporting to corporate and foundation donors
  • Contribute to the development of annual business plans and budgets
  • Assist with the writing of additional fundraising, marketing and communications pieces as required
  • Support additional fundraising and marketing campaigns as required

Job Requirements

  • A university degree and/or relevant college diploma in fundraising, marketing or events management
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience in creating and managing fundraising events for a small non-profit organization
  • Significant experience with volunteer management and a proven track record in securing sponsorship for events
  • Superb project management and organizational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and lead multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and communicate with a variety of stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, sponsors and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with experience in writing and producing marketing materials and sponsorship proposals
  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, maturity and the ability to work within the framework of an integrated development program and team-oriented environment
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases (preferably Raiser’s Edge)
  • Ability to travel regionally and nationally

Assets

  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising databases
  • A strong understanding of local and international environmental and social justice issues
  • A commitment to the principles and values of the Jane Goodall Institute
  • Knowledge of written and spoken French

Director, National Youth Programs

The Jane Goodall Institute is a global non-profit organisation that supports wildlife research, education and conservation.  Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s global youth action program. Started in Tanzania in 1991 and inspired by Dr. Goodall herself, Roots & Shoots is now active in more than 120 countries around the world.

Over the past five years, this program has experienced significant growth in Canada, and there are now close to 600 registered member groups across the country. We are also actively working with a number of Aboriginal communities.

We are seeking an experienced Program Director to join our small team in Toronto with responsibility for developing and implementing the strategic direction for Roots & Shoots in Canada. This individual will provide strong vision and leadership to the program, manage a small team, develop productive partnerships with other youth organizations, and become directly involved in the hands-on implementation of teacher and youth workshops, school presentations and campaigns. The Director is also responsible for the marketing of the program, and for helping to secure and manage the financial resources required to support it.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the Institute’s current educational and youth engagement initiatives, and successfully implement strategies to expand the reach of the Roots & Shoots program and deliver measurable results in terms of youth action and engagement.
  • Represent the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada on environmental education issues related to sustainable living, learning and engagement. 
  • Develop partnerships with other organizations that will complement the Institute’s strategic priorities.  
  • Prepare annual business plans, and manage the Roots & Shoots budget.   
  • Lead, motivate and manage Roots & Shoots program staff. 
  • Actively solicit funds in support of the program from major donors, foundations and corporations, including the preparation of proposals and the management of donor stewardship through regular reporting.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan for the program, including the creation and production of promotional and communications materials.
  • Develop and implement an active program to engage adult mentors and champions in the program, including workshops for teachers.
  • Develop and coordinate special events such as workshops and conferences.

Job Requirements

  • A degree in education, environmental sciences/studies or a relevant area.
  • A minimum of seven to 10 years relevant professional experience, ideally in a not-for-profit environment, with at least three to five years experience managing a small team.
  • An excellent understanding of the principles of youth engagement, and significant hands-on experience working directly with young people.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills with a track record of successfully developing and delivering workshops and other training programs.
  • Excellent project management and strategic planning skills, and highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Significant experience with marketing and fundraising for youth programs.
  • Highly developed computer skills including data management and presentation applications.
  • The ability to travel approximately 10 to 20% of the time, regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Drive, enthusiasm, flexibility and a great sense of humour!

  • Knowledge of written and spoken French
  • Direct experience with the formal education system.
  • A strong understanding of local and international environmental and social justice issues.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities in Canada.
  • A commitment to the principles and values of the Jane Goodall Institute.
