Tips on eating local and organic in your city

Eating local and organic Why our food choices matter

The food we consume has a direct impact on the environment. By choosing products

that haven't traveled long distances, are lower on the food chain, and were produced without chemicals, you can make a difference in the fight against climate change and water consumption.

A typical meal made with ingredients from a supermarket consumes 4-17 times more petroleum in transportation than the same meal made from local ingredients! (Read this 2002 Worldwatch report to find out how).

And according to a UN study (reported in the Guardian in February 2008), climate change emissions from shipping amount to 1.12 billion tonnes of CO2 a year - nearly 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions!

If you're still not convinced, the 100 mile diet provides even more reasons to eat locally, and Green Earth Organics offers ten reasons to eat organic.

We have compiled this directory to provide helpful links to make it easier for you and your family to eat local, organic and seasonal food. There are plenty of options, so read up and find the one that works best for you!
